97th Academy Awards — March 2, 2025

March 2, 2025

Anora won Best Picture, Sean Baker won Director, Adrien Brody won Actor, and Mikey Madison won Actress. Baker’s triumph was notable not just because he won multiple Oscars that night, but because it let a comparatively small-scale independent film dominate the ceremony. That gave the 97th a useful “Oscars still sometimes validate true indie energy” narrative that many recent ceremonies lacked.
